Who were 2008's most influential tastemakers?

CTV.ca has an article about the influential tastemakers of 2008, with the help of PereHilton.com and LaineyGossip.com. They talk about the Twilight phenomenon and how Robert Pattinson dethroned Zac Efron from his Heartthrob status. 'Twilight'

Already a hit book series, the big-screen adaptation of "Twilight" brought home more than US$70 million in its opening weekend.

Lainey said Twilight redefined the practice of marketing a movie.

Instead of doing the normal press circuit, the cast went from mall-to-mall in North America and talked to any journalist that would listen.

The movie was "low budget," "cheesy," and "embarrassingly low-rate" but it beat Bond at the box-office, she said.

"It forced Tom Cruise to re-evaluate how he markets his movies," Lainey said, citing his unusual trip to Canada to market his latest flick, "Valkyrie."

Meanwhile, theatres were packed with squealing teenage girls, eager to get a glimpse of Robert Pattinson, who stars as vampire Edward Cullen.

Pattinson is even influencing young boys.

"With the explosion of 'Twilight' it's becoming almost attractive and desired for boys not to wash their hair a la Robert Pattinson," Lainey said.

She said Pattinson has managed to dethrone "High School Musical's" Zac Efron as a teen heartthrob.

Efron, so perfectly coiffed Lainey calls him "lip-gloss," has been "blown out of the water" by Patterson.

"It's very interesting to see how someone gets dethroned, it's fascinating," said Lainey.

Pattinson will likely reign well into next year with the "Twilight" sequel already scheduled for release in late-2009.
